This is where Lord Ganesha was born and where the Himalayan Trout live. Few other lakes are as beautiful as this one. Most people do this journey in April to June or September to November, like I did in 1999. Winter, on the other hand, lends a magical touch to this already lovely trek. So we (four of my friends and I) agreed to try this walk from December 17 to 25, 2009.
A informed friend told us about a local guide, which saved us the stress of haggling with trekking companies. I didn't know about online trekking groups like Indiahikes back then. The price our guide gave us was fair. The trip from Uttarkashi to Uttarkashi cost about Rs. 6000 per person, which I thought was really affordable. It's clear that you can't get or will have trouble getting a bargain like this now, five years later. The reason I'm writing this article is because this walk is so beautiful in the winter.
