The famous Milam glacier trek through the Johar valley changed a lot after the Uttarakhand floods of June 2013. This was notably true in the lower Goriganga valley, from the existing Milam trail head at Chillamdhar to Rairgari. The trail beyond Rairgari is pretty much the same as the old one, but it's harder now since there are so many ups and downs to avoid landslips and washouts, and because of flood damage, there are detours to deal with.
Even if the floods have caused a lot of damage and the valley will ultimately be connected by a road, it is still a fascinating and exciting trek into a lonely valley full of legends about Indo-Tibetan trade that thrived until the 1962 conflict between China and India. The trekker is drawn into a journey through geographies and time by abandoned ghost towns, beautiful scenery, vistas of the huge Nanda Devi and the Milam glacier.
The next set of photos is from a trek that Vijay did with two other people between October 4 (when they left Munsiyari) and October 14 (when they got back to Munisyari). They didn't have any porters, guides, or mules.
Steep drop to Jimighat near to the Gori Ganga River. Then, for three hours, we walked steadily up the true right side of the valley to Lilam.
