There are many temples in Uttarakhand that honour different Hindu gods and goddesses. Five important shrines in the Garhwal region of the state are dedicated to Lord Shiva. These shrines are called Panch Kedar and include Kedarnath, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpnath. There are many different legendary stories about how these places came to be. A common story says that the Pandava princes, who are the main characters in the Mahabharata, were told to go to Uttarakhand to do penance for the bloodshed in the war.
This story comes from Hindu scriptures. According to legend, Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, found Lord Shiva hiding as a buffalo. When people saw the god, he disappeared and reappeared in five different places in the Himalayas. People think that each of these places stands for a different part of the Lord: Kedarnath stands for the hump, Madhmaheshwar stands for the belly button, Tungnath stands for the arms, Rudranath stands for the face, and Kalpeshwar stands for the jata or hair.
